St. Genesius

The Patron Saint of Actors, Comedians, and Musicians

Feast Day: August 25th

Genesius was a well-known pagan actor in Ancient Rome who ridiculed Christians with his satirical jokes and acts. On one occasion, he performed a play for the Emperor in which he would mock Christian rituals by being baptized onstage. The grace from the sacrament, though done in jest, completely converted Genesius and he began to proclaim Christ.

The Emperor, realizing that it was no longer a joke, ordered Genesius to renounce his faith-filled proclamation. Genesius refused, declaring: "There is no other King but Christ!” He died a martyr under Diocletian in the 2nd Century.

“But whilst I was washed with the water…I saw a company of bright angels over my head, who recited out of a book all the sins I had committed from my childhood; and having afterwards plunged the book into the water which had been poured upon me in your presence, they showed me the book whiter than snow. Wherefore, I advise you, O great and mighty emperor, and all ye people here present, who have ridiculed these mysteries, to believe, with me, that Jesus Christ is true Lord…that it is through him you may obtain the forgiveness of your sins.” ~St. Genesius
